Canopy by Hilton, Reykjavik October 2017

Absolutely fabulous! We definitely chose the right place to stay in Reykjavik! The Canopy prides itself on showcasing the best of Icelandic architecture, design and art and it is full of creative touches.

We didn’t realise when we booked but the hotel is just steps away from bus stop number 7 where the airport bus dropped us off and picked us up for our return journey. The same bus stop was also our rendez-vous point for the tours we had booked so transport couldn’t have been easier.

As soon as we entered the hotel we sensed the relaxed ambiance and enjoyed the stylish decor. I loved the public areas; the seating areas in the lounge and café were very chic and perfect for enjoying a coffee and cake or something stronger.

In the café area you could borrow a record player and some albums from the extensive, eclectic vinyl collection. This was a great touch.

Café with treats and music

Every evening at 6pm there was a drink tasting here with a canapé. We enjoyed a vodka cocktail one evening and a local beer the next. A great way to warm up after an exciting day sightseeing.

Vodka cocktail, trout blini and dominos! What’s not to like?

Our room

Our room was on the second floor. I loved the grey and blue colours, chosen to reflect Icelandic nature and landscapes. Apparently the wallpaper and carpets were inspired by Basalt lava columns. The overall effect was stunning.

Eating

The buffet breakfast, which is included in the room rate, was quite spectacular. It took three mornings to be able to enjoy the full range of offerings!

What to start with was a real dilemma! The rhubarb oaty crumble, fresh fruit, Skyr with blueberries or cereal? Should I follow my starter with avocado on toast, a range of local cheeses, cold meats, smoked salmon with mustard sauce, trout pizza, bacon, egg fried to the perfect consistency, boiled eggs, frittata, fried potatoes or waffles and maple syrup? This could all be followed by a croissant or something else from the range of pastries! You really need to stay for a few nights to sample the full range! Every morning I did enjoy the “Canopy wellness drink” which was a great way to wake up your taste buds!

The Geiri Smart restaurant also proved to be a great choice for dinner on our final evening in Reykjavik. Here are a few highlights:

Even the bread was delicious!
Pan-fried langoustine, celeriac remoulade, chives, apple, stone bramble
Fillet of cod, potato purée, pickled onions, cauliflower gratin, Jarl glaze

To sum up

The Canopy by Hilton is a fabulous choice. The location was perfect, the food was delicious and it was both homely and very stylish. I think this new brand will be really successful.
